About GCG
Gateway Community Group believes that all people need a decent home to live in.
There are growing numbers of homeless families in our community. Homelessness or inadequate housing threatens the health and well being of children and parents alike. Homeless families cannot provide their children with a safe and stable environment where they can develop their full potential. Housing poverty is a growing concern. There are families of all ages in our community who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Homelessness is a condition from which it is very difficult to escape.
Gateway Community Group provides assistance on the basis of need and without distinction of any kind such as political or religious affiliation, racial or ethnic origin. Gateway works to respond to the housing needs of disadvantaged families in the general community.
The service provides the following assistance and support:
- Medium-long term accommodation
- Referral services
- Tenancy advice
- Advocacy
- Networking with other services
- Assisting in developing living skills
- Information on income support, employment and health
- Community development and capacity building
Gateway is funded under a joint Commonwealth and State Governments agreement, known as the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP). The Queensland Department of Communities funds the administration and support work of this service. The Queensland Department of Housing provides housing for the service.
Gateway's Story
Gateway Community Group Inc began in 1982 as a response to the lack of affordable accommodation for disadvantaged families.
Gateway Community Group Inc was initially ecumenical in nature, comprising the local Catholic & Anglican parishes. Later, this was strengthened by the involvement of the Balmoral Uniting Church Community Centre.
Over the years, a small core of volunteers took responsibility for all aspects of the developing service. As the demand for service grew the need for paid staff became evident and in 1989 the Group employed its first full time Co-Ordinator.
Gateway Community Group is managed by a voluntary Board of Management and provides a range of services to homeless and disadvantaged families in the community. The group welcomes the involvement and participation of all members of the community.
